Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)

The secosteroid form of vitamin D produced in skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol on UVB exposure, and a substrate for hepatic 25-hydroxylation to 25(OH)D.

Pre-clinical mechanism

Converted in liver and kidney to the active hormone calcitriol (1,25-(OH)₂D), which acts via the nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) to regulate calcium-phosphate handling, immune-cell differentiation and hundreds of downstream genes.
